A flying disc is the simplest piece of sports equipment ever made and the hardest to put down once you start. The whole range comes down to two decisions: how heavy, and what you plan to do with it.
175 g competition discs and 27 cm recreational discs
The 175 g disc is the competition standard, used in sanctioned Ultimate worldwide. Heavier and denser, roughly 27 cm across, it holds a line through wind and rewards technique. This is what serious play uses, and what you want if you throw regularly with the same people.
Lightweight 27 cm discs in softer plastic are made for everyone else — beaches, parks, campsites, back gardens. They cost little, forgive a bad throw, and travel well in a bag. They wander in wind, which is the price of being easy to throw.
Choosing a flying disc for how you actually play
If you throw with adults on open ground and want the disc to go where you aimed it, take full weight. If you throw with children, on a beach, or with people who have never caught a disc before, take the light one. Most households eventually own both, and they are not interchangeable.
Grip, rim and how a disc feels
The rim shape decides how a disc leaves the hand. A deeper rim gives more purchase for a hard throw; a shallower one is easier to catch. Softer plastic flexes on impact and stings less; harder plastic holds its shape and flies more consistently over years of use.
Colours that stay findable
The most practical decision on this page. Bright oranges, yellows and whites are far easier to spot in long grass or under trees than dark greens and greys. A glow in the dark disc removes the problem entirely once the light goes.
Flying discs and disc golf discs are not the same thing
Discs built for the sport of disc golf are a different shape entirely — around 21 cm across, with a bevelled rim and four printed flight numbers that describe exactly how they fly. They are thrown at targets rather than to a partner, and a flying disc will not substitute for one.
