Discs decide what a shot can do. Disc golf accessories decide whether the four hours around it are any good. None of this equipment is exciting, and all of it gets used every single round.
Mini marker discs and the rules of play
A mini marker disc marks your lie after every throw, and it is required under the rules rather than optional. Play without one in a sanctioned round and you are taking penalty strokes. It is also the cheapest item you will ever put in a bag, which is why experienced players carry two — one in the bag and one in a pocket.
Minis double as a marker for casual games and as a tie-breaker disc when a group needs to decide a tee order.
Towels, grip and playing in the wet
Grip fails before technique does. A disc golf towel keeps your hand and the disc rim dry, and that affects a throw more than any plastic type once it rains or the grass holds dew. A wet rim slips at release, which produces off-axis torque and a flight that wobbles instead of holding its line.
Why two towels beats one
One towel stays dry for your hands, the other does the actual cleaning of discs and shoes. On a wet round, a single towel is soaked by the fourth hole and stops being useful for either job. Waffle-weave towels lift moisture faster than flat cotton and dry between holes.
Grip bags, chalk and cold weather
A grip bag filled with chalk or a drying compound keeps the hand consistent when it is humid or cold. In winter, grip is the first thing to go, and it costs far more distance than most players realise.
Disc retrievers and getting your discs back
A disc retriever telescopes out over water and into undergrowth, with a hook sheathed in rubber so it lifts a disc without scarring the rim. Most collapse to around 40 cm and weigh a couple of hundred grams, which means they live in a bag pocket permanently and cost you nothing to carry.
It pays for itself the first time it saves a premium driver from the bottom of a pond — and every course has at least one hole where that is a real possibility.
Scoring, seating and the rest of the kit
Paper scorecards and a pencil still work when a phone battery does not. A stool changes a long round on a busy course. A rain cover protects a bag that cost more than the discs inside it.
Carry it all in a proper disc golf bag, and practise at home with a basket.
