175 grams. Every Ultimate player knows the number, because it is the weight used in sanctioned play worldwide. An Ultimate frisbee disc at that weight behaves in a way the sport has standardised around for decades.

Why 175 g became the Ultimate standard

At that weight a disc carries enough momentum to cross a full field, stays predictable in a crosswind, and lands softly enough to catch cleanly at speed. Lighter discs float and wander; heavier ones punish the hand on a hard catch. The sport tested the range and settled on 175 g, and it has not moved since.

Diameter matters as much as mass. A regulation disc measures around 27 cm, which is what makes a two-handed catch natural and a one-handed rim grab possible.

WFDF certification and tournament play

Certification by the World Flying Disc Federation means the disc meets the specification for sanctioned play — weight, diameter, rim configuration and flight characteristics all within tolerance. In practice it is a guarantee of consistency: every disc in a batch flies like the last one, which matters when a team shares discs across a tournament.

What to look for beyond the weight

A consistent rim profile matters more than anything printed on the face. It decides how the disc leaves your fingers and whether the flight repeats. Durable plastic matters second — a disc that softens after a season starts flying differently just as you have learned it.

Playing after dark

Games rarely stop because the light does. A glow in the dark disc at full weight lets an evening game finish properly rather than being abandoned, and it is far easier to find in long grass afterwards.

Ultimate discs are not disc golf discs

They are different sports with different equipment. An Ultimate disc is thrown to a person; a disc golf disc is thrown at a target, is around 21 cm across, and has a bevelled rim designed to curve in a specific, repeatable way.

For casual throwing rather than competition, the lighter recreational discs are easier on beginners and children.
